Thu Dec 19 10:46:04 UTC 2024: ## Parliament descends into chaos as BJP and Congress clash over Ambedkar remark

**New Delhi, December 19, 2024** – A heated clash erupted in the Indian Parliament today, escalating from a controversial remark by Home Minister Amit Shah about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar to physical altercations and cross-complaints filed at the Parliament Street Police Station.

The conflict began with Shah’s comment on Monday, stating that invoking Ambedkar’s name had become fashionable. This sparked outrage from the opposition, particularly the Congress, who demanded an apology and his resignation. The Trinamool and Congress have filed privilege motions against Shah. The Prime Minister Narendra Modi also weighed in, accusing the Congress of spreading lies to cover their misdeeds.

The situation intensified today as protests and counter-protests erupted outside Parliament. BJP MP Phangnon Konyak accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of misconduct, alleging he got too close and shouted at her during a protest. She filed a complaint with Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Simultaneously, BJP MPs Anurag Thakur and Bansuri Swaraj filed a police complaint against Gandhi, accusing him of shoving and injuring fellow BJP MPs Pratap Chandra Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput. Sarangi claimed Gandhi pushed another person who then fell onto him, resulting in his head injury.

The Congress countered with allegations of their own, claiming three BJP MPs physically assaulted Gandhi during a peaceful march. They also reported injuries to their MPs, including Mallikarjun Kharge, who cited his recent knee surgery. Congress leader Jebi Mather accused the BJP of hatching a conspiracy to create a scene.

The escalating violence led to numerous complaints filed at the Parliament Street Police Station, with women MPs from both parties accusing each other of physical assault. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sarcastically questioned Gandhi’s martial arts background in response to the allegations.

The events have plunged the Parliament into turmoil, raising serious questions about decorum and the conduct of MPs. The ensuing investigations promise to further intensify the already strained political climate.
