Thu Dec 19 15:31:51 UTC 2024: ## Karnataka Cracks Down on Illegal Immigrants: 183 Arrested
**BELAGAVI, Karnataka – December 19, 2024** – Karnataka’s Home Minister G. Parameshwara announced a crackdown on illegal immigrants, stating that a special task force has apprehended 183 individuals – 159 Bangladeshi and 24 Pakistani nationals – so far. The Minister termed the presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants a “menace.”
Responding to questions in the Legislative Council, Dr. Parameshwara revealed that many of the arrested Bangladeshi nationals (115) possessed forged documents. He acknowledged the ongoing challenge of preventing illegal entry, despite efforts by defense personnel. The task force’s work, he explained, is an ongoing process resulting in the deportation of thousands annually.
BJP member D.S. Arun raised concerns that Karnataka had become a haven for illegal immigrants working in homestays, resorts, and coffee estates, alleging involvement in drug trafficking and other criminal activities. He also implicated manpower contractors in facilitating their employment.
In response, Dr. Parameshwara pledged to collaborate with the planters’ association to raise awareness and aid in identifying illegal immigrants within the agricultural sector. He also noted the concerning disappearances of some African students studying in the state.
