Tue Dec 17 07:15:05 UTC 2024: ## Bengaluru Shivers as Winter Sets In
**Bengaluru, December 17, 2024** – A cold snap has gripped Bengaluru, with minimum temperatures dropping to 15°C over the past few days, marking a definite onset of winter in the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 15.5°C at 8:30 am on Tuesday, with similar readings at HAL Airport and Kempegowda International Airport. This is one degree Celsius below the average minimum temperature for December (16.4°C), according to Dr. N. Puviarasan, scientist and head of IMD Bengaluru.
The IMD forecasts clear skies for the next two days, with fog and mist likely in the early mornings. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 27°C and 17°C respectively.
While 15°C might not seem exceptionally cold, it’s a significant drop for Bengaluru. The IMD notes that the city’s all-time lowest minimum temperature for December was 8.9°C, recorded way back on December 29, 1883. More recent chilly spells include December 11, 2016 (12°C) and December 24, 2011 (12.8°C). In contrast, the highest December maximum temperature was 31.4°C on December 27, 2018. Winter in Bengaluru typically lasts from November to January, with January being the coldest month.
