**THOOTHUKUDI, December 17, 2024** – Despite three days of sunshine following recent heavy rains, several residential areas in Thoothukudi city remain severely waterlogged. Over 100 motor pumps deployed by the Corporation are struggling to drain the stagnant water.
Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan visited affected areas including Athiparasakthi Nagar, ESI Hospital premises, Postal and Telegram Colony, and Kathirvel Nagar on Tuesday. She instructed officials to deploy additional pumps to expedite the drainage efforts. Mayor P. Jegan also conducted inspections in various other waterlogged neighbourhoods.
The Mayor previously attributed the persistent waterlogging to low-lying vacant plots, causing significant inconvenience to residents. The Corporation has identified these plots and requested owners to raise the land levels to prevent future stagnation. The situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the city in managing stormwater drainage.
