Tue Dec 17 12:45:58 UTC 2024: ## Uttar Pradesh Police Prevent Congress Protest, Place Leaders Under House Arrest

**Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh –** Ahead of a planned protest at the Uttar Pradesh State Assembly, police have placed numerous Congress leaders under house arrest, sparking accusations of stifling dissent from the opposition party.

The Congress had planned a demonstration for Wednesday, December 18th, to protest government policies including unemployment, rising prices, and alleged atrocities against women. According to Congress District Chief Pradeep Singhal in Amethi, over 100 party leaders and officials, including all 17 block presidents, were placed under house arrest. Singhal condemned the action as undemocratic, stating that the government is silencing the voice of the people.

The police action follows an official notice issued to Congress General Secretary Anil Yadav under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS), warning of legal action for disrupting law and order. Yadav had announced the planned protest on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting issues such as farmer distress and the lack of jobs.

While the Uttar Pradesh Police cite concerns about maintaining law and order during the ongoing Winter Session of the Assembly, the Congress alleges the government is attempting to suppress legitimate criticism. The party maintains it will continue to fight for the people’s voices to be heard.
