CHENNAI, December 17, 2024 – A year after overcoming life-threatening complications, premature twins celebrated their first birthday at the Government Raja Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar (RSRM) Lying-in Hospital in Chennai, expressing gratitude to the medical team that saved their lives.

Born prematurely at 30 weeks, weighing only 1.2 kg and 1.3 kg respectively, the twins faced numerous challenges, including respiratory distress syndrome, severe birth asphyxia, and recurrent seizures. One twin also suffered intraventricular haemorrhage and pneumonia. The twins required extensive care, including 20 days of ventilator support for one and 15 days for the other, followed by additional respiratory support and Kangaroo Mother Care. They spent 50 days in the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Hospital superintendent Dr. Shanthi K. Elango described the twins’ neonatal period as “stormy,” highlighting the exceptional care provided by the NICU team. The twins’ treatment included laser therapy for Retinopathy of Prematurity.

The parents expressed their deep gratitude by returning to the hospital with the twins to celebrate their milestone birthday, sharing a cake and receiving gifts from the medical staff. The heartwarming event underscores the dedication and expertise of the RSRM Lying-in Hospital’s neonatal team.
