Mon Dec 16 17:22:33 UTC 2024: **NIA Arrests ULFA(I) Operative for Planting IEDs in Guwahati**
**NEW DELHI, December 16, 2024** – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Jahnu Baruah, alias Arnab Axom, on Monday for his alleged role in planting improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Guwahati during Independence Day celebrations. Baruah, an operative of the banned terrorist outfit ULFA(I), confessed to planting four of the eleven IEDs seized by Assam Police.
The arrest followed a search of Baruah’s Dibrugarh home and several weeks of surveillance. The NIA, which took over the investigation from state police in September, stated that Baruah’s involvement was uncovered through technical and human intelligence. The IEDs were reportedly planted following a call for an Independence Day boycott by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah, who threatened dire consequences in a video message. The NIA alleges that Baruah acted on the orders of Aishang Asom, alias Abhijit Gogoi, and other senior ULFA(I) leaders. The Assam Police actively assisted the NIA in the operation.
