Tue Dec 17 11:49:49 UTC 2024: ## One Nation, One Election Bill Introduced in Indian Parliament

**New Delhi, December 17** – The Indian Parliament witnessed a heated debate today over the introduction of the “One Nation, One Election” bill. The bill, presented by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, proposes to synchronize all national and state elections across India, a move that has sparked significant controversy.

The bill passed its first reading with over 200 MPs voting in favor and nearly 150 against, out of a total of 369 votes cast. However, the minister requested that the bill be referred to a joint parliamentary committee for further deliberation before proceeding.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC, Samajwadi Party, and the Uddhav Thackeray faction of the Shiv Sena, strongly opposed the bill, voicing concerns about its potential impact on democratic processes and the rights of individual states.

Currently, India holds elections for the Lok Sabha (national parliament), state legislative assemblies, and local bodies at different times. The proposed legislation aims to streamline this process by conducting all elections simultaneously. The debate over the bill is expected to continue as it undergoes further scrutiny by the parliamentary committee.
