Mon Dec 16 17:05:13 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Captain Calls for Shaw to Improve Work Ethic After Disappointing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

**Bengaluru, Dec 16, 2024** – Mumbai cricket captain Shreyas Iyer has publicly called on teammate Prithvi Shaw to improve his work ethic, expressing concern over the talented batsman’s underperformance in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Shaw, who went unsold in the 2025 IPL auction, failed to deliver consistent scores throughout the tournament, with only a 49 against Vidarbha in the quarterfinals standing out.

Iyer acknowledged Shaw’s exceptional natural talent, stating, “Prithvi is a God-gifted player… It is just that he needs to improve his work ethic.” He emphasized that Shaw’s potential is immense but dependent on a stronger commitment to training and self-improvement.

Iyer also stressed the importance of self-accountability within professional sports, indicating that while he and others have offered guidance, ultimately Shaw must take responsibility for his performance. “We can’t babysit anyone,” Iyer stated. “Every professional playing at this level needs to know what they should be doing.” Despite the criticism, Iyer remains confident that Shaw possesses the ability to reach his full potential if he addresses his shortcomings. Mumbai won the SMAT title on Sunday.
