NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court of India issued an interim order on Monday preventing musician T.M. Krishna from being recognized as a recipient of the Sangita Kalanidhi M.S. Subbulakshmi Award. The court also barred Krishna from presenting himself as an awardee until it rules on an appeal challenging the award’s grant.
The award, presented by the Music Academy in Chennai and sponsored by The Hindu group, was given to Krishna on Sunday following a Madras High Court ruling that overturned an earlier injunction. However, the appeal was filed by M.S. Subbulakshmi’s grandson, V. Shrinivasan, who argued that Krishna had made objectionable comments about the late singer, a Bharat Ratna awardee.
While the Supreme Court acknowledged Krishna’s right to express his views, it stated that some of his comments were deemed “not in good taste” by the plaintiff. The court emphasized that its interim order does not reflect on the Music Academy, The Hindu group, or Krishna’s musical abilities. The matter is adjourned for further hearing.
