CHENNAI, December 13, 2024 – The Madras High Court has overturned a single judge’s order that barred Carnatic singer T.M. Krishna from receiving the M.S. Subbulakshmi award for 2024. The court ruled in favor of allowing the award to be presented to Krishna, rejecting arguments made by Subbulakshmi’s grandson, Sreenivasan.
Sreenivasan had petitioned the court, claiming that Krishna’s past criticism of Subbulakshmi and the existence of Subbulakshmi’s will, which stipulated against the creation of memorials or trusts in her name, warranted preventing the award. His lawyers argued that granting the award in Subbulakshmi’s name contradicted her wishes.
However, the appellate bench, comprising Justices S.S. Sundar and P. Dhanapal, upheld the award. The judges accepted the argument that Subbulakshmi’s will pertained to her assets and not posthumous honors. They also countered the claim that Krishna’s past remarks should disqualify him from the award. The court noted that the award has been conferred in Subbulakshmi’s name for the past decade.
The court’s decision clears the way for T.M. Krishna to receive the prestigious award.
