Mon Dec 16 11:49:26 UTC 2024: ## Mysterious “Disease X” Outbreak in Congo Claims Over 100 Lives
**KINSHASA, CONGO -** A new and mysterious disease, dubbed “Disease X,” is rapidly spreading through Kwango province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, causing alarm among health officials. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed at least 31 deaths, but local reports suggest the toll could be as high as 143 out of over 406 cases since October 2024. The majority of fatalities are children.
Disease X presents flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, cough, runny nose, breathing difficulties, body aches, and anemia. The similarity to common illnesses makes diagnosis challenging, and the exact cause remains unknown. While initial investigations suggest a flu-like illness, its symptoms overlap with pneumonia, malaria, measles, and even COVID-19. The WHO is currently collecting samples for laboratory testing.
The remoteness of Kwango province, coupled with poor infrastructure and heavy rainfall, is hampering response efforts. It takes WHO teams two days to reach the affected area. The high mortality rate is partly attributed to the pre-existing malnutrition among the population, weakening their ability to fight the illness.
The Congolese Center for Disease Control (CDC) has warned that the disease may be airborne, although this remains unconfirmed. While the WHO currently considers the risk to be regional, the proximity of Kwango province to Angola raises concerns about potential international spread.
The outbreak highlights critical vulnerabilities in the region’s healthcare system. Malnutrition, inadequate healthcare access, and delays in treatment in underdeveloped areas exacerbate the impact of such diseases. The WHO urges strengthened health infrastructure and improved access to care as essential to preventing future outbreaks.
