Mon Dec 16 11:49:24 UTC 2024: ## Mysterious Illness Outbreak in DRC Kills 31, WHO Investigates

**Kinshasa, DRC** – A concerning outbreak of an unknown illness in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has claimed the lives of 31 people and affected 406 others between October 24th and December 5th, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The outbreak is centered in the Pangi health zone of Kwango province.

The Congolese Ministry of Public Health alerted the WHO on November 29th to a surge in unexplained deaths in the region. Symptoms reported include fever, headache, cough, runny nose, and body aches. A significant number of those affected, 71 percent, are children under the age of 15, with a disproportionate number of cases involving children under five. The WHO notes that severe malnutrition is a common factor among serious cases.

The remote and rural nature of the Pangi health zone, compounded by the rainy season and resulting floods, is hindering access and response efforts. The WHO has dispatched a team of experts to investigate the outbreak, collect samples for laboratory testing, and assess the spread of the illness.

While the exact cause remains undetermined, the WHO suspects several possibilities, including pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, measles, malaria, and underlying malnutrition which may be exacerbating the effects of other illnesses. Laboratory testing is underway to pinpoint the precise cause or causes of death. The WHO has deployed a rapid response team to identify the source of the outbreak and strengthen the response system.
