Mon Dec 16 11:49:25 UTC 2024: ## Mysterious Illness Kills Dozens in Congo; WHO Investigates
**KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo** – A mysterious illness, dubbed “Disease X” by experts, is spreading through the Kwango province of the Democratic Republic of Congo, causing alarm among health officials. Since October 24th, 406 cases have been reported by the World Health Organization (WHO), with 31 deaths. However, local authorities report a significantly higher death toll of 143, highlighting the challenges in data collection in the remote region.
The illness, predominantly affecting children and malnourished individuals (64% of cases are under 14), is characterized by fever, headache, cough, runny nose, body aches, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases have shown symptoms of anemia.
The WHO has dispatched a team to the affected Panzi Health Zone, a rural area 700 kilometers from Kinshasa, to investigate the cause. The remote location and poor infrastructure are hampering investigation efforts. The team is exploring potential links to influenza, COVID-19, malaria, measles, or other infectious agents. While the outbreak is currently confined to a single region, the high mortality rate and the unknown etiology raise concerns.
Dr. Neha Rastogi Panda, while emphasizing that the risk to Indians is currently low, advises against travel to Congo and recommends screening for anyone returning from the region. Individuals experiencing similar symptoms should practice social distancing and seek immediate medical attention. Further investigation is needed to determine the cause of this concerning outbreak and to assess its potential for wider spread.
