**New Delhi:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress party during a Lok Sabha debate commemorating 75 years of India’s Constitution, accusing the party of undermining the document through numerous amendments and the imposition of the Emergency.
In a speech delivered Saturday, Modi lauded the Constitution’s framers for championing unity in diversity, but criticized those who, he alleged, sowed seeds of discord. He singled out the Emergency of 1975 as a “stain” on the Congress’s legacy, highlighting its suspension of constitutional provisions and curtailment of civil liberties.
Modi stated that the Congress amended the Constitution 75 times in six decades, beginning with amendments under Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951. He further criticized Indira Gandhi for further amending the Constitution and imposing the Emergency, and Rajiv Gandhi for overturning the Shah Bano verdict. He also targeted the Nehru-Gandhi family’s alleged disregard for the Constitution, citing instances of bypassing the Supreme Court and undermining parliamentary processes. He specifically mentioned Sonia Gandhi’s influence through the National Advisory Council and Rahul Gandhi’s public tearing of an ordinance.
The Prime Minister contrasted the Congress’s actions with his government’s commitment to inclusive policies, emphasizing the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (everyone’s togetherness, everyone’s development) mantra. He presented eleven proposals aimed at safeguarding reservation rights, preventing religion-based reservations, promoting regional development, and fostering a nepotism-free political environment. He also highlighted the repeal of Article 370 as a step towards national unity.
Modi’s address marks a significant escalation in the BJP’s ongoing political battle with the Congress, setting the stage for further clashes in the lead-up to upcoming elections.
