**Kyiv, Ukraine –** Ukraine is battling another wave of Russian missile attacks targeting its energy infrastructure, plunging hundreds of thousands into darkness amidst freezing winter temperatures. The attacks, which occurred on December 13th, 2024, mark the latest escalation in Russia’s ongoing campaign to cripple Ukraine’s power grid.
Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed the attacks, stating that engineers are working to minimize the damage. Social media reports indicated the use of cruise and hypersonic Kinzhal missiles. Neighboring Poland has raised its military readiness in response to the escalating threat.
This is at least the eleventh large-scale attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the beginning of the year. Ukraine has implemented widespread power outages to manage the deficit, further exacerbating the hardships faced by civilians in sub-zero temperatures.
The attacks come a day after the Kremlin vowed retaliation for a Ukrainian strike on a Russian airfield using U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles. President-elect Donald Trump publicly criticized Ukraine’s use of these missiles, although he affirmed that he would not abandon Ukraine, seeing continued support as leverage for ending the war. However, his stated desire for a swift resolution raises concerns that he might pressure Ukraine into an unfavorable peace deal with Russia.
Ukraine is urgently appealing to its Western allies for more air defense systems, fearing a potential decrease in support under the incoming Trump administration. Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga specifically requested 20 NASAMS, HAWK, or IRIS-T systems to counter the attacks.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a negotiated settlement that considers both Ukraine’s sovereignty and the European Union’s security interests. Discussions with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also included the possibility of foreign troops stationed in Ukraine following a ceasefire, although President Zelenskyy only stated that he was considering the idea. The ongoing attacks highlight the desperate need for increased international support for Ukraine’s defense and the significant humanitarian crisis unfolding during this harsh winter.
