Fri Dec 13 21:20:00 UTC 2024: ## Marquette University Celebrates Achievements and Mourns Loss in 2024
**Milwaukee, WI** – Marquette University concluded a year marked by both significant accomplishments and profound sorrow. The year began with the tragic passing of President Michael R. Lovell on June 9th after a battle with sarcoma. The university community held numerous memorials and events, including the LOVELLSTRONG Legacy Run, to honor his ten years of leadership and the deep connection he fostered with students, faculty, and staff. His legacy will continue to be celebrated throughout the academic year.
Despite the grief, 2024 brought numerous successes. Academically, Marquette Law School Poll was ranked third best in the US by 538, and the university received a record $47.8 million in research and development expenditures. The Princeton Review again named Marquette among the Best Value Colleges and top schools for internships. A substantial $1.25 million Mellon Foundation grant will further support prison initiatives.
Athletics saw significant achievements. The men’s basketball team reached the Sweet 16, while the women’s team competed in the NCAA tournament. The university also benefited from significant philanthropic support. NBA Hall of Famer Dwyane Wade pledged $3 million for a summer reading program, scholarships, and a new men’s basketball practice facility. Alumni Bob and Kim Eck also contributed significantly to fund innovative projects in the College of Health Sciences and the new men’s basketball facility. Further substantial donations were received from the Huck family and the Sprovieri family, supporting scholarships and the new Wellness + Helfaer Recreation facility.
Infrastructure improvements included the opening of three new spaces: the Lemonis Center for Student Success, the renovated David A. Straz, Jr., Hall (home to the College of Nursing), and the updated Chapel of the Holy Family. The university’s eight-year fundraising campaign surpassed its $750 million goal.
Marquette also saw the installation of a new St. Ignatius statue, the appointment of Dr. Kimo Ah Yun as the 25th president, and the creation of a new Chief Wellness Officer position. Research breakthroughs included the discovery of a novel probiotic to combat antibiotic-resistant infections. Finally, Marquette hosted the Republican National Convention, generating scholarship funds through facility rentals.
The year concluded with the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony and the women’s volleyball team’s advancement to the NCAA Tournament regional semifinals. The university continues to focus on its strategic plan, “Marquette 2031: Securing Our Future,” and its commitment to its mission.
