Fri Dec 13 08:15:15 UTC 2024: ## Rajnath Singh Accuses Congress of Misrepresenting Constitution’s History in Lok Sabha Debate

**New Delhi:** Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh launched a sharp attack on the Congress party during a Lok Sabha debate commemorating the adoption of the Indian Constitution on November 26, 1949. Singh accused the Congress of attempting to downplay the contributions of certain individuals to the Constitution’s creation and of using the document for political gain.

Singh alleged that the Congress has consistently tried to “hijack and appropriate” the work of the Constitution-makers, obscuring key historical details from the public. He contrasted this with the BJP’s approach, asserting that BJP leaders “carry the Constitution in their hearts,” unlike the Congress, who he claimed merely “keep it in their pockets.”

The minister highlighted instances where he believes judges faced repercussions for upholding constitutional principles, particularly citing the superseding of senior judges JM Shelat, KS Hegde, and AN Grover in 1973, and the denial of the Chief Justice position to Justice HR Khanna for his dissenting judgment during the Emergency. He also invoked Veer Savarkar, sparking an uproar from the Opposition.

Singh’s speech focused on what he portrayed as a consistent BJP commitment to upholding the Constitution, even in the face of adversity. The debate itself marks the anniversary of the Constitution’s adoption and serves as a platform for discussion on its legacy and ongoing relevance.
