**Chennai, December 13, 2024** – Torrential rains lashing parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry led to widespread school and college closures on Friday, December 13th, 2024. Multiple districts declared holidays due to heavy downpours and resulting waterlogging.

Affected areas include Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Karur, Salem, Cuddalore, Dindigul, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Karur, Tiruppur, and Valparai. In some districts, only schools were closed, while others declared holidays for both schools and colleges. Puducherry Minister A. Namassivayam announced closures for all schools and colleges in Karaikal and Puducherry.

While Chennai experienced only light showers, the Tiruvallur district collector allowed headmasters to decide on closures based on local water stagnation. The water resources department announced the release of water from Chembarambakkam and Red Hills reservoirs.

The heavy rainfall, which began on Thursday, forced tourists to stay indoors in Kodaikanal. The situation remains fluid, with officials continuing to monitor weather conditions and make necessary decisions regarding school closures.
