Thu Dec 12 18:45:12 UTC 2024: ## Mamata Banerjee Vows to Oppose “One Nation, One Election” Bill
**Kolkata, West Bengal –** West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vehemently condemned the Union Cabinet’s approval of the “One Nation, One Election” bill, vowing that her Trinamool Congress MPs will fiercely oppose the legislation in Parliament. In a social media post on December 12, 2024, Ms. Banerjee denounced the bill as “draconian” and an “authoritarian imposition” designed to undermine India’s democracy and federal structure.
Ms. Banerjee’s opposition to the bill is longstanding. In January, she wrote to the secretary of the high-level committee examining the proposal, expressing concerns that the concept was unclear and violated the country’s federal principles. She further urged the Election Commission to approach the matter rationally.
The Chief Minister reiterated her concerns, stating that the cabinet had “bulldozed” the bill through, ignoring expert and opposition voices. She emphasized that West Bengal would not succumb to what she termed “Delhi’s dictatorial whims,” framing the fight as one to safeguard Indian democracy from autocracy.
