New Delhi, December 13, 2024 – The Indian government is actively addressing widespread staff shortages across its ministries and departments, according to Union Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh. Responding to concerns in the Rajya Sabha about vacancies ranging from 30% to 60% in some areas since 2019, Singh stated that ministries have been repeatedly instructed to fill these positions in a timely manner.
The government is employing various strategies to tackle the issue. The Rozgar Melas, job fairs launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2022, have played a significant role, with thirteen such events held across 40-45 cities, distributing lakhs of appointment letters. Furthermore, ministries are mandated to form in-house committees to identify and address the root causes of backlog vacancies, particularly those related to reservations. Each ministry must also designate a liaison officer to ensure compliance with reservation policies, supported by a dedicated Special Reservation Cell. While acknowledging that vacancies and recruitment are an ongoing process, the government’s commitment to filling these posts remains firm.
