Fri Dec 13 10:31:40 UTC 2024: ## Karthigai Deepam Festival of Lights to Illuminate Tamil Nadu and Kerala on December 13th

**TIRUCHIRAPPALLI, TAMIL NADU** – The vibrant Hindu festival of Karthigai Deepam will be celebrated on Friday, December 13th, 2024, across Tamil Nadu and Kerala. This significant religious event, dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Murugan, is marked by elaborate rituals and traditions culminating in the spectacular lighting of the Mahadeepam (great lamp) atop Thiruvannamalai hill.

The auspicious Karthigai Nakshatra will begin at 7:50 AM on December 13th and conclude at 5:48 AM on December 14th. The main ceremonies, however, take place after sunset with the lighting of the Mahadeepam serving as the festival’s centerpiece. Thousands of devotees are expected to gather in Thiruvannamalai to witness this breathtaking display of divine light, considered a source of blessing.

The festival’s origins are rooted in ancient legends, including one that describes Lord Shiva manifesting as an endless flame, showcasing his infinite power. Another legend connects the festival to the birth of Lord Murugan under the Krittika star.

Celebrations extend beyond Thiruvannamalai’s Arunachaleswarar Temple. Homes across the region will be illuminated with oil lamps (deepams), symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. Families will prepare special foods, offer prayers, and create kolams (decorative floor designs) to welcome the auspicious occasion. Fasting and the sharing of traditional sweets, like puffed rice with jaggery, foster a strong sense of community and togetherness.

Karthigai Deepam is not only a deeply spiritual festival but also a powerful symbol of unity and shared faith, bringing communities together in celebration of light and devotion.
