Fri Dec 13 13:02:02 UTC 2024: ## Karthigai Deepam 2024: Tamil Nadu Celebrates Festival of Lights
**Chennai, Tamil Nadu –** Tamil Nadu is brightly lit up today as it celebrates Karthigai Deepam, a significant festival marking the Tamil month of Karthigai. Observed across the state, this festival of lights sees homes and temples illuminated simultaneously. The main event focuses on lighting lamps (deepam), particularly earthen lamps (agal vilakku), believed to bring prosperity and ward off ill fortune.
This year’s Karthigai Deepam is particularly vibrant, with Shiva and Murugan temples showcasing grand celebrations. Homes are traditionally adorned with rows of agal vilakkus, with a special focus on placing lamps on the entrance kolam (decorative floor art). The use of earthen lamps holds deep cultural significance, symbolizing Ma Lakshmi (the Goddess of wealth) and ensuring the longevity and prosperity of the household. It’s considered auspicious to use at least three new earthen lamps, though older ones can also be used.
The highlight of the festival remains the lighting of the Maha Deepam atop the Annamalaiyar Temple in Thiruvannamalai at 6 PM. This grand spectacle is believed to bring the divine light into homes, signifying wealth and blessings. The festival’s emphasis on earthen lamps stems from a belief that they invite blessings from Lord Sani and ensure the permanence of wealth.
Karthigai Deepam is more than just a religious observance; it’s a joyous community celebration marking the arrival of wealth and good fortune, bringing together families and communities in the shared illumination of light.
