**Bengaluru, India** – A 34-year-old deputy general manager at a Bengaluru-based private firm, Atul Subhash, died by suicide on December 9th, leaving behind a 24-page suicide note detailing allegations of harassment by his wife and her family, and accusations of bribery against a judge. His father, Pawan Kumar, told ANI that his son was “broken from inside” due to the multiple cases filed against him and his family since January 2021.
Subhash’s note accuses his wife of filing nine cases against him, including charges of murder, sexual misconduct, financial harassment, domestic violence, and dowry. He also alleged that a judge demanded a ₹5 lakh bribe to settle the case, a claim corroborated by his father. The family alleges that the initial demand started at ₹20,000 and escalated.
Subhash’s brother, Vikas, stated that the family was unaware of his intentions and that he had sought help from various political leaders and institutions, including the President and the Supreme Court, detailing the alleged harassment and misuse of legal processes. Vikas further emphasized the need for legal reforms to prevent the misuse of laws intended to protect women from domestic violence.
The incident comes amidst growing concerns regarding the misuse of Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code, which addresses cruelty by husbands and their relatives. The Supreme Court recently expressed similar concerns, highlighting the potential for the section to be used for personal vendettas. Bengaluru police have already sent a team to Jaunpur, Uttar Pradesh, the wife’s family’s hometown, to investigate the allegations. The case has sparked a wider debate on the need for legal reforms to ensure fair and just processes for all parties involved in domestic disputes.
