Fri Dec 13 10:22:39 UTC 2024: **Mumbai Records Highest Successful Run Chase in T20 Knockout Stage; Rahane Stars**

Bengaluru, December 12, 2024 – Ajinkya Rahane’s stellar performance powered Mumbai to a record-breaking victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy quarterfinals. Rahane, 36, scored a magnificent 85 runs off 45 balls, rescuing Mumbai from a potentially disastrous situation after captain Shreyas Iyer’s disappointing batting performance. Mumbai successfully chased down a challenging 222 runs, winning by six wickets and securing a semi-final berth.

This victory marks a new milestone in men’s T20 cricket. Mumbai’s 222-run chase is the highest successful run chase ever recorded in a knockout stage, surpassing the previous record of 210 runs set by Karachi Dolphins in 2010. This is also the first time a team has successfully chased down 220 or more runs in a knockout match.

Rahane’s innings, which included ten fours and three sixes, ended in the 16th over when he was dismissed for 85. His exceptional form in the tournament continues, with a total of 334 runs in six innings, including four half-centuries. His highest score in the tournament was 95 runs off 54 balls against Andhra Pradesh.

Rahane’s impressive form is particularly encouraging for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who acquired him for ₹1.5 crore in the last IPL auction. With the departure of Shreyas Iyer, KKR is searching for a new captain, and Rahane’s current form makes him a strong contender for the role. Having previously captained the Indian team and other IPL franchises, Rahane’s leadership experience could prove invaluable to KKR. While Venkatesh Iyer has expressed interest in the captaincy, the senior player Rahane is the more likely choice to lead the star-studded team including Venkatesh Iyer, Rinku Singh, and Sunil Narine.
