Wed Dec 11 15:21:44 UTC 2024: **Delhi High Court Seeks MEA Response in Case of Imprisoned Indian Citizen in Qatar**

NEW DELHI, December 11, 2024 – The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Qatar, demanding their response to a plea regarding an Indian citizen imprisoned in Qatar. Muhammed Kayalvakkath Bava has been incarcerated since June 26, 2016, with his sentence extending until July 3, 2028.

His father, Kunhibava, filed the plea, seeking consular access and legal assistance for his son. The plea alleges that Bava’s signatures were forged on documents related to a share transfer, preventing him from pursuing legal action against those he claims defrauded him. Bava, a long-time businessman in Qatar with significant holdings, including 10 hypermarkets and a distributorship with Ooredoo, reportedly could not have signed the documents while imprisoned.

Advocate Jaimon Andrews, representing Kunhibava, argues that consular access would provide crucial communication and support for Bava during his imprisonment. The court will hear the case again on January 27, 2025.
