Wed Dec 11 15:15:10 UTC 2024: ## Woman Suffers Electric Shock After Power Poles Collapse in Thoothukudi
**Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, December 11, 2024** – A 27-year-old woman, Thenmozhi, sustained electric shock injuries after three uprooted electric poles brought down power cables onto her motorbike in Thoothukudi on Wednesday. The incident occurred near Stem Park in Sundaravelpuram West when prolonged waterlogging weakened the soil, causing one pole to lean and subsequently pull down two others.
Thenmozhi, riding with a pillion rider, Muthumathi (20), was crossing the main road when the poles collapsed. Muthumathi escaped injury, but Thenmozhi received an electric shock from a single-phase line. While the fuse blew immediately limiting the severity of the shock, she suffered neurological weakness and was unable to move her limbs.
She was admitted to the Government Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital and is currently in the intensive care unit under observation. Hospital officials report a slight improvement in her condition.
Tangedco’s Superintending Engineer, M. Saharban, attributed the incident to waterlogged soil weakening the foundation of the poles. Repair work has been completed with two poles restored and one replaced. Power supply has been fully restored.
Social Welfare Minister Geetha Jeevan visited Thenmozhi in the hospital to offer support to her and her family. The incident highlights concerns about infrastructure safety following periods of heavy rainfall.
