Wed Dec 11 17:25:32 UTC 2024: ## Top Lawyer Withdraws from R.G. Kar Rape-Murder Case

**Kolkata, December 12, 2024** – Supreme Court advocate Vrinda Grover announced her withdrawal from the case representing the family of the doctor raped and murdered at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9th. Ms. Grover’s chamber had provided pro bono legal assistance since September, handling the case across multiple courts.

The statement from Grover’s chamber cited “certain intervening factors and circumstances” for the withdrawal. The chamber highlighted their extensive work, including representing the family daily since November 4th at the Sealdah sessions court and securing the recording of statements from 43 prosecution witnesses. They successfully opposed bail applications for other accused. The trial is nearing completion, with the remaining evidence expected to be presented in the next few days.

The case, which sparked nationwide outrage, is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Charges have been framed against Sanjay Roy, a civic police volunteer. This follows the previous representation of the victim’s family by Rajya Sabha MP Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya.
