**GENEVA** – The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, has called for a cautious and voluntary approach to the return of Syrian refugees following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad. While acknowledging the symbolic end of the Assad regime after 13 years of war, Grandi stressed that the situation in Syria remains uncertain and any repatriation must prioritize the safety and informed consent of refugees.
Grandi’s statement comes in response to several European nations, including Germany, France, and Austria, suspending asylum decisions for Syrian nationals following Assad’s fall. He emphasized the need for “patience and vigilance,” asserting that sustainable returns can only occur when conditions on the ground allow for voluntary and safe repatriation.
The UNHCR chief highlighted the importance of a transition that respects the rights and aspirations of all Syrians, regardless of their background. He noted that the likelihood of successful returns hinges on the new leadership’s commitment to establishing law and order and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
While the Syrian opposition has called for the return of exiled Syrians to help rebuild the country, concerns remain. Amnesty International criticized the European suspension of asylum decisions, citing the continued uncertainty regarding human rights in Syria. The UNHCR echoed these concerns, warning against premature deportations. Despite calls from some far-right politicians for immediate deportations, the German Foreign Office acknowledged that the end of the Assad regime does not guarantee immediate peace and stability.
