**NEW DELHI** – The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate (UG) admissions will undergo significant changes in 2025, aiming to improve efficiency and fairness, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced.
Key changes include a reduction in the maximum number of subjects students can choose from six to five, and the elimination of the hybrid test format. From 2025, the CUET UG will be entirely computer-based. The number of subjects offered has also been streamlined from 63 to 37.
Another major alteration is the standardization of the exam duration to 60 minutes for all subjects, replacing the previous variable timing of 45-60 minutes. Furthermore, all questions will be compulsory, removing the option of choosing which questions to answer.
A notable shift in eligibility is the removal of the requirement that students must have studied the chosen subjects at the 12th-grade level. This allows students to explore subjects outside their high school curriculum. Admissions for any dropped subjects will be based on General Aptitude Test (GAT) scores.
These changes follow a review by an expert panel formed to assess the CUET’s first two years. The 2022 edition was marred by technical issues, and the 2024 exam faced cancellations in Delhi due to logistical problems. The UGC aims for these revisions to create a smoother, more equitable exam process for students.
