Tue Dec 10 14:27:36 UTC 2024: ## Mumbai Bus Crash Kills Seven, Injures Dozens

**Mumbai, India –** A speeding electric bus crashed into multiple vehicles at Kurla Bhaji Market in Mumbai on Monday night, resulting in the deaths of seven people and injuries to at least 49 others. The incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on S.G. Barve Marg when a BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) bus, traveling from Kurla railway station to Saki Naka, collided with approximately 20-25 vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, bikes, and vans.

The bus, a three-month-old electric vehicle operated under a wet lease by a private contractor, reportedly experienced brake failure. The driver, Sanjay More, has been arrested and claims the brakes malfunctioned, causing him to lose control. However, police are investigating whether negligence also played a role. Eyewitness accounts suggest that in a panic, the driver may have accidentally accelerated instead of braking.

The deceased have been identified as Kannis Fatima Ansari (55), Afreen Abdul Salim Shah (19), Anam Shaikh (20), and Shivam Kashyap (18), along with three others. The injured were transported to several hospitals across the city.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of the victims from the Chief Minister’s Aid Fund. The Mumbai Municipal Corporation and BEST will cover the medical expenses of the injured. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety of public transport in the city. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
