The incident occurred Monday night around 9:30 p.m. when a speeding electric bus, reportedly due to brake failure, crashed into approximately 20-25 vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, and vans.

The bus, a three-month-old Olectra Greentech vehicle on wet lease, was traveling from Kurla railway station to Saki Naka when the driver, identified as Sanjay More, lost control. More has been arrested and claims the brakes failed, causing him to accidentally accelerate instead of braking. Police are investigating potential mechanical failure and driver negligence.

The deceased, identified as Kannis Fatima Ansari (55), Afreen Abdul Salim Shah (19), Anam Shaikh (20), and Shivam Kashyap (18), along with three others, were among those injured rushed to various hospitals in the Kurla area. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced an ex gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of the victims and stated that the Mumbai Municipal Corporation and BEST will cover the medical expenses of the injured.

Shiv Sena MLA Dilip Lande corroborated the driver’s claim of brake failure, stating the driver panicked and accelerated instead of braking. A Tardeo Regional Transport Office (RTO) official confirmed the bus was registered in August 2024 under the name of EVEY Trans. The accident site saw a large emergency response, including the Quick Response Team (QRT) and Rapid Action Force (RAF).
