**Bengaluru:** S.M. Krishna, a veteran Indian politician who served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka and India’s External Affairs Minister, passed away at the age of 92 early this morning at his Bengaluru residence. He was reportedly suffering from age-related ailments.

Krishna’s distinguished career spanned several decades. He served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004 and later as the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. From 2009 to 2012, he held the crucial portfolio of External Affairs Minister in the UPA government under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. His political journey also included serving as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993. He was a member of various cabinets, including those led by Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Manmohan Singh.

Krishna, born on May 1, 1932, in Somanahalli, Maddur Taluk, Karnataka, received his early education in Mysore and graduated in law from the Government Law College, Bengaluru. He furthered his education at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He joined the BJP in 2017 after a long career in the Congress party. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2023. Krishna’s death marks the end of an era in Indian politics.
