**Mumbai, December 10, 2024** – A runaway Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) bus caused a devastating accident in Kurla, Mumbai on Monday night, resulting in seven fatalities and 42 injuries. The BEST undertaking has launched an internal investigation headed by Chief Manager (Transport) Ramesh Madavi, and will provide ₹2 lakh in compensation to each victim’s family, along with covering medical expenses for the injured.

The accident, which involved the bus ramming into pedestrians and other vehicles, has prompted outrage. A BJP delegation met with BEST General Manager Anil Diggikar, demanding increased compensation (₹10 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹50,000-₹2 lakh for the injured). The BJP also criticized the BEST’s use of a wet lease model for buses between 2018 and 2021, suggesting this contributed to the accident and calling for a review of the practice.
