**Bengaluru, India** – S.M. Krishna, a veteran Indian politician who served as the country’s Foreign Minister, Chief Minister of Karnataka, and Governor of Maharashtra, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. The Karnataka government has declared a three-day state mourning period in his honor, including a public holiday on Wednesday. Flags on government buildings will fly at half-mast, and all official and entertainment programs are canceled for the three days.
Krishna’s body will lie in state in Bengaluru until 8 AM Wednesday, before being transported to his hometown of Maddur for a state funeral at 4 PM. Public viewing will also be held in Maddur from 10:30 AM to 3 PM on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar confirmed the funeral arrangements.
Krishna held numerous prominent positions throughout his political career, including Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008, and Union Minister of External Affairs from 2009 to 2012 under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. He joined the BJP in March 2017.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Krishna as an exceptional leader who dedicated his life to improving the lives of others. He noted Krishna’s focus on infrastructure development during his time as Chief Minister of Karnataka and praised him as a voracious reader and thoughtful individual.
