Tue Dec 10 13:37:38 UTC 2024: ## Soros Sparks Political Firestorm in India After Criticizing Modi

**NEW DELHI** – Billionaire investor George Soros is once again at the center of a political controversy in India, following his critical remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on Soros, accusing the Congress party of having ties with him and alleging a conspiracy to destabilize the Modi government.

Soros, known for his philanthropy and significant investments in media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN, has a history of involvement in global politics. He has been accused of influencing elections and manipulating markets in several countries, facing fines and bans in some regions. His Open Society Foundations have also been subjects of controversy.

The BJP’s ire stems from Soros’s comments, made at the Munich Security Conference, where he characterized Modi as undemocratic and linked his rise to power to violence against Muslims. This is not the first time Soros has criticized Modi. Previously, he criticized the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir, and linked Soros-funded investigative journalism organization, Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), to revelations about the Adani Group that allegedly damaged the group’s reputation and impacted the Indian stock market. The OCCRP’s reporting largely mirrored earlier allegations made by the Hindenburg Research report.

The Congress party has denied any connection to Soros, but the BJP’s accusations have led to disruptions in the Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament) as the party demanded a discussion on the matter. The BJP claims Congress leader Sonia Gandhi is connected to organizations receiving funding from Soros.

The Indian government has countered Soros’s criticism, viewing it as an attempt to undermine India’s democratic structure from abroad. Soros, a Hungarian-American, has previously expressed similar criticisms of leaders like Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping. His extensive business career and philanthropic activities have earned him both praise and strong opposition globally. The ongoing controversy highlights the complex interplay between finance, media, and politics in the global arena.
