Mon Dec 09 08:51:32 UTC 2024: ## India’s WTC Final Hopes Hang in the Balance After Adelaide Loss

**Sydney, Australia** – India’s chances of reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final have taken a hit following their defeat in the second Test against Australia in Adelaide. Before the match, India topped the points table with a 61.11% win percentage. The loss dropped them to 57.29%, placing them third.

India’s path to the final, which pits the top two teams in the standings against each other, is now considerably steeper. With three Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle (2023-25), India needs to win all three to guarantee qualification. A clean sweep would elevate their percentage to 64.04%. However, Australia and South Africa remain strong contenders. If India wins all three, they would automatically eliminate Australia from contention.

To secure a spot in the final on merit, India must defeat Australia in all remaining matches. A 4-1 series win would give them 64.04%, securing a place. A 3-2 win, however, leaves them at 58.77%, a percentage that doesn’t guarantee qualification as it depends on the outcome of other series. Australia could still surpass India even with a 2-3 series loss if they manage a 2-0 whitewash against Sri Lanka in their upcoming series. Conversely, a Sri Lankan victory in either match would significantly boost India’s prospects. A 2-2 draw in the India-Australia series would leave India’s fate dependent on other teams’ results.

The outcome of the South Africa-Sri Lanka series is crucial. A South African win would put them at 63.33%. Even with a subsequent Brisbane Test victory, India would only reclaim the top spot if Pakistan defeats South Africa. A Sri Lankan victory, however, would significantly ease India’s path to the top 2.

Australia’s upcoming series against Sri Lanka is also vital. Even if Australia loses the series to India 2-3, a 2-0 victory over Sri Lanka would still put them at 60.53% and in contention. But even one Sri Lankan win eliminates Australia, benefiting India. The road to the WTC final remains uncertain but challenging for Team India.
