Mon Dec 09 06:44:50 UTC 2024: ## Tonga’s Prime Minister Resigns Amidst Royal Tensions
**Nuku’alofa, Tonga –** Tongan Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni unexpectedly resigned on Monday, December 9, 2024, preempting a no-confidence vote in parliament. The resignation comes less than a year before national elections and highlights ongoing tensions between the government and King Tupou VI.
While Mr. Sovaleni cited “the good of the country” in his resignation statement, his departure follows months of strained relations with the monarchy. These tensions included the King’s withdrawal of confidence in Sovaleni as Defence Minister earlier this year, a perceived snub at a major regional summit, and a widely observed, though unacknowledged, formal apology ceremony.
Although some lawmakers initially criticized the King’s actions as unconstitutional, the Prime Minister and his Foreign Minister ultimately resigned their respective ministerial posts in April, before Sovaleni’s final resignation.
Speaking to Radio New Zealand, Sovaleni acknowledged “differences in views” but avoided directly linking his resignation to disagreements with the King. His successor will now be chosen by Tonga’s 26-member parliament, a body comprised of elected lawmakers and nobles.
Sovaleni’s tenure, beginning in 2021, was marked by challenges including the ongoing recovery from the 2022 volcanic eruption and tsunami, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and increasing climate change threats. The former senior public servant and Oxford graduate leaves office as Tonga navigates its relatively young democracy, established through reforms in 2010 which shifted power from the monarchy to elected officials.
