Sun Dec 08 18:15:02 UTC 2024: ## Syrian Rebels Declare Victory, Assad Regime Falls; Flag Change Expected

**DAMASCUS, SYRIA** – Syrian rebels have declared the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime after a swift offensive, ending the Assad family’s decades-long rule. Rebel flags now fly across the country, replacing the images of Assad that once dominated the landscape. This momentous event is expected to lead to a change in the national flag, symbolizing a new era for Syria.

The current Syrian flag, adopted in 1980, features red, white, black, and green, representing the blood shed in past revolutions, a peaceful future, and Arab unity. However, the rebel victory has brought to the forefront a modified version of the 1932 independence flag, featuring green, white, black, and three red stars, signifying a break from the Assad government.

Reports indicate that Assad and his family have sought asylum in Moscow, Russia. Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, leader of the Islamist alliance that led the offensive, declared the rebels’ commitment to pursuing their revolutionary goals, referring to the uprising that began in 2011. The 2011 protests against Assad’s rule sparked a brutal conflict that drew in international powers.

While Assad’s whereabouts remain unconfirmed, Prime Minister Mohammed al-Jalali has expressed willingness to cooperate with any new leadership chosen by the Syrian people. Celebrations erupted in several countries, including Germany, Turkey, and Greece, where supporters of the rebels waved the opposition flag, with some even raising it at the Syrian embassy in Athens, leading to several arrests. The change in national leadership and the likely adoption of a new flag mark a significant turning point in Syrian history.
