Mon Dec 09 08:02:50 UTC 2024: ## South Korean President Faces Travel Ban Amid Martial Law Investigation

**Seoul, South Korea** – South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol is facing a potential overseas travel ban as police investigate allegations of rebellion stemming from his controversial declaration of martial law last week. The investigation, spurred by complaints filed by the main opposition Democratic Party, centers on Yoon’s actions which saw armed special forces deployed onto the streets of Seoul.

The head of South Korea’s corruption investigation unit confirmed on Monday that he has ordered the travel ban. While the President typically enjoys immunity from prosecution, this does not extend to charges of rebellion or treason. The opposition party has labelled Yoon’s actions “unconstitutional, illegal rebellion or a coup.”

The investigation has already yielded arrests. Former Defence Minister Kim Yong Hyun, who reportedly advised Yoon to impose martial law, was arrested on Sunday. Three senior military leaders have also been suspended pending investigation for their alleged roles in the incident.

President Yoon apologized for his actions on Saturday, stating he would accept accountability. However, this apology hasn’t quelled the political turmoil. The opposition party, after failing in a weekend impeachment attempt, plans to file a fresh impeachment petition this week. The President’s declaration of martial law, amidst already low approval ratings and political gridlock, further destabilizes the nation. His administration, however, asserts it will manage the ensuing political crisis.
