Mon Dec 09 12:08:45 UTC 2024: ## Parliament to Debate Constitution’s 75th Anniversary Amidst Political Wrangling

**New Delhi, India** – The Indian Parliament will hold a special debate marking the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to deliver a response on Saturday. The Lok Sabha debate begins Friday, while the Rajya Sabha debate will take place on December 16th and 17th, led by Home Minister Amit Shah.

This parliamentary session, concluding December 20th, has been marked by significant clashes between the ruling BJP and the opposition parties, primarily the Congress. The Congress has accused the BJP of spreading misinformation linking former party president Sonia Gandhi to businessman George Soros, while the BJP has faced criticism over issues including the farmers’ protests.

The opposition’s demand for a Constitution anniversary debate follows concerns about alleged BJP plans to fundamentally alter the Constitution. Congress leaders, including Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have publicly emphasized this concern, even taking their oaths as MPs with copies of the Constitution. The BJP has repeatedly denied these claims.

Adding fuel to the fire, recent comments by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju suggesting varying interpretations of the Constitution have further fueled opposition anxieties. Last month, Prime Minister Modi himself criticized opposition parties for allegedly undermining the Constitution’s spirit. The debate promises to be a significant political showdown as both sides air their views on the Constitution’s past, present, and future.
