Panipat, Haryana – Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman today announced the launch of LIC’s “Bima Sakhi” scheme, a major initiative aimed at furthering women’s financial inclusion and employment. The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is expected to create 200,000 jobs for women across India over the next three years, with no upper age limit (officially open to women aged 18-70).

The scheme builds on a decade of LIC’s work in empowering women financially, increasing the number of women agents from 600,000 in 2017 to over 700,000 currently. The program will be implemented across over 3,800 LIC branches nationwide. The Finance Minister highlighted the government’s broader goal of women-led development in India’s journey to become a developed nation by 2047. This aligns with the Prime Minister’s objective of creating “Lakhpati Didis” (millionaire sisters) – aiming to empower one woman in each village to earn ₹100,000 annually. Nearly one million women have already achieved this milestone, according to the Minister. The launch event in Panipat also included the laying of a foundation stone for a related project. The BJP’s election manifesto for Haryana included promises of monthly pensions for women and subsidized gas cylinders, further demonstrating the party’s commitment to women’s welfare.
