**Panipat, Haryana:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the “Bima Sakhi” scheme in Panipat, Haryana today, aiming to empower women economically by providing them with employment opportunities in the insurance sector. The scheme, whose theme is “Self-Reliant Women, Our Prosperity,” targets training and financial assistance for women to become insurance agents.
Prior to the launch, PM Modi inaugurated the Maharana Pratap Horticulture University’s main campus in Karnal via remote control.
Addressing a gathering in Panipat, PM Modi highlighted the government’s efforts in financial inclusion, citing the opening of over 30 crore Jan Dhan bank accounts for women. He emphasized the role of women in nation-building, stating that they are a source of energy for a developed India by 2047.
The Bima Sakhi scheme aims to employ two lakh women over the next few years. The program will provide training to women who have passed the 10th standard and offer financial support for three years. PM Modi stated that successful insurance agents earn approximately ₹15,000 per month, potentially providing Bima Sakhis with an annual income of around ₹1.75 lakh. He stressed the scheme’s significance in enhancing social security and poverty alleviation.
The launch event was attended by Union Minister of Energy, Manoj Sinha, and two other central ministers. PM Modi personally distributed enrollment letters to women from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Tripura. He also mentioned the success of other government initiatives like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, highlighting the over ₹20,000 crore in claims paid out under these schemes. Furthermore, he referenced the success of the “Namo Drone Didi” initiative in Haryana, showcasing the economic opportunities available to women through technology.
