Sun Dec 08 17:49:46 UTC 2024: ## Chennai Film Screening Raises Awareness of Dementia

**CHENNAI, December 9, 2024** – A special screening of four films – two Tamil and two English – focusing on the challenges faced by individuals with dementia and their families, took place Sunday at the Dr. MGR Film and Television Training Institute. The event, organized by The Dementia Care Foundation of Curi Hospital, featured a panel discussion with filmmaker Mani Ratnam, danseuse Leela Samson, psychiatrist Dr. S. Janani, and clinical psychologist Poornima Rajan Misra.

The screening highlighted the lack of societal awareness surrounding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Ratnam revealed that his portrayal of an Alzheimer’s patient in “OK Kanmani” was inspired by a resident in his apartment complex. Samson shared an anecdote of a neighbor whose mother suffered from undiagnosed Alzheimer’s, underscoring the need for greater understanding.

Dr. Janani differentiated between normal aging and the symptoms of dementia, emphasizing that while it’s a neurodegenerative disease causing irreversible personality changes, early diagnosis allows for medication to slow progression. She stressed the importance of maintaining a familiar home environment for patients, discouraging institutionalization.

Misra discussed the vital role of rehabilitation for those living with dementia. The event also included an awards ceremony for a photography competition showcasing the experiences of caregivers. The panel discussion, moderated by theatre artist P.C. Ramakrishna, aimed to foster empathy and knowledge about dementia within the community.
