Mon Dec 09 08:28:23 UTC 2024: ## Bangladesh: Fresh Case Filed Against Hindu Monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Amidst Rising Tensions

**Dhaka, Bangladesh –** A new case has been filed against Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das, already imprisoned on sedition charges, further escalating tensions in Bangladesh. The complaint, lodged by a businessman, alleges assault by Das’s followers on November 26th, resulting in injuries. The case names Das as the primary accused, along with 164 identified individuals and hundreds more unidentified.

This latest development follows a series of clashes linked to Das’s arrest on November 25th. Police have already filed multiple cases related to attacks on law enforcement and obstructions during protests sparked by his detention. A separate incident near Rangam Cinema Hall on the same day resulted in another case being filed, naming individuals from various political organizations and ISKCON.

The businessman’s complaint claims he was targeted for his clothing and sustained injuries to his hand and head. He attributed the delay in filing the complaint to his subsequent illness.

Das’ arrest, and the subsequent violence, have fueled concerns about religious freedom in Bangladesh and strained relations with India. The situation has worsened since the interim government assumed power following the departure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The denial of bail for Das and the killing of an assistant government prosecutor during a protest have further inflamed the situation. A bail hearing for Das has been postponed until January 2nd due to a lack of legal representation. ISKCON Bangladesh has publicly denounced Das’ arrest and called for peaceful coexistence.
