**Lucknow, December 8, 2023** – A significant drop in temperatures has swept across Uttar Pradesh, ushering in a period of biting cold. Northwest winds have contributed to the chill, with minimum temperatures falling below normal in most parts of the state.
Lucknow recorded a minimum temperature of 9.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 0.8 degrees below normal, while the maximum reached 25.5 degrees Celsius. Kanpur experienced its coldest day of the season so far, with a minimum temperature of 8.5 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a chance of rain in western Uttar Pradesh, including Meerut, on Sunday, December 8th. The IMD predicts colder temperatures across other parts of the country in the next couple of days.
The weather in Uttar Pradesh has been erratic in recent weeks, with fluctuating temperatures throughout November. While daytime temperatures in cities like Lucknow, Agra, and Kanpur have been relatively warm, the arrival of colder weather is expected to impact the overall December chill. Sunday will see a change in weather patterns, with some areas experiencing light fog in the mornings and a potential decrease in daytime temperatures, although nighttime temperatures may rise again.
Meerut experienced a particularly sharp drop in temperature overnight on Saturday, registering a 3.1-degree Celsius decrease in 24 hours, reaching a minimum temperature of 6.3 degrees Celsius, making it the second coldest night in the state. Niamapur recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 5.1 degrees Celsius. The IMD and private agency Skymet Weather predict a significant cold wave to begin around December 10th.
