Sat Dec 07 17:39:09 UTC 2024: ## Over 100 Farmers in Maharashtra Fight Waqf Board Land Claim
**Latur, Maharashtra – December 7, 2024** – More than 100 farmers in Latur district, Maharashtra, are contesting a land claim filed by the Waqf Board. The Board claims ownership of 300 acres of land that the farmers have cultivated for generations. Notices have been issued to 103 farmers, and the case is currently before the Maharashtra State Waqf Tribunal in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
The farmers assert that the land has been passed down through their families and is not Waqf property. They are seeking intervention from the Maharashtra state government. Two hearings have already taken place, with the next scheduled for December 20th. One farmer, Tukaram Kanwate, stated their determination to fight for their land rights.
This comes amidst the ongoing debate surrounding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha in August to improve the Waqf Board’s operations and property management. The bill is currently under review by a Joint Parliamentary Committee. Waqf properties are those dedicated to religious or charitable purposes under Islamic law.
