Sat Dec 07 08:53:20 UTC 2024: ## Samajwadi Party Quits Maharashtra Opposition Alliance Over Babri Masjid Remarks
**Mumbai, December 7, 2024** – The Samajwadi Party (SP) announced its withdrawal from the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a coalition of opposition parties in Maharashtra, citing controversial comments made by a close aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray.
The decision follows a social media post by Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Milind Narvekar praising the demolition of the Babri Masjid and featuring a quote from Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray expressing pride in those involved. A newspaper advertisement issued by the Shiv Sena (UBT) also congratulated those who participated in the demolition.
Maharashtra SP unit chief Abu Azmi stated that the party could not remain in an alliance with a group that celebrated the demolition. He emphasized the incompatibility of the SP’s values with such statements, questioning the difference between the BJP and the MVA if such rhetoric is tolerated. Azmi confirmed he was in contact with SP president Akhilesh Yadav regarding the decision.
The SP, holding two MLA seats in the Maharashtra assembly, has formally left the MVA coalition. This development adds to the complexities of the state’s political landscape.
