Fri Dec 06 19:30:15 UTC 2024: ## Tamil Nadu’s Coastal Regions Face Heightened Climate Change Risks: Anna University Study

**Chennai, December 7, 2024** – A new climate risk assessment by Anna University’s Climate Studio reveals that northeastern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The study, presented to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on December 5th, highlights increased risks from cyclones, floods, and rising sea levels in districts such as Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvarur, Kancheepuram, and Nagapattinam. Prolonged water stagnation is worsening agricultural losses in these already-stressed regions.

While the lower delta districts (Pudukottai, Sivagangai, and Ramanathapuram) face comparatively lower coastal risks, the Eastern Ghats are experiencing degradation leading to drought and decreased agricultural productivity. Conversely, the Western Ghats show greater resilience due to dense forests and significant rainfall.

The report urges immediate climate adaptation strategies, particularly for central districts facing moderate risks. Proposed measures include improved flood management, water tank systems, and diversion projects.

Mayiladuthurai, identified as the highest-risk district, has received a dedicated climate action plan. This plan focuses on sustainable water supply through improved infrastructure, groundwater recharge, and salinity prevention. It also promotes climate-smart agriculture through adaptive crop varieties, horticulture, and agroforestry, aiming to improve soil health and conservation techniques.
