Fri Dec 06 19:50:46 UTC 2024: ## Muhammad Tops UK Baby Name Charts for 2023

**London, UK** – For the first time, Muhammad has claimed the top spot as the most popular name for baby boys in England and Wales, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Over 4,600 newborns were registered with the name in 2023, surpassing Noah, which held the top position in previous years.

The ONS data reveals a significant shift in naming trends. While Muhammad has consistently ranked within the top 10 since 2016, its rise to number one marks a notable milestone. Variations of the name, including Mohammed and Mohammad, also featured in the top 100. Conversely, traditionally popular names like Victoria, Harry, William, Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Charles have fallen out of favour.

Completing the top ten boys’ names are Noah, Oliver, George, Leo, Arthur, Luca, Theodore, Oscar, and Henry. For girls, Olivia, Amelia, and Isla retained their positions as the top three names for a third consecutive year, followed by Lily, Freya, Ava, Ivy, Florence, Willow, and Isabella. New entries to the top 100 included Hazel, Lilah, Autumn, Nevaeh, and Raya for girls, and Jax, Enzo, and Bodhi for boys.

The ONS also highlighted the influence of seasonality and pop culture on name choices. Names like Holly, Robyn, and Joseph were more popular in December, while Summer and Autumn saw a rise in their respective seasons. Celebrity influence was evident, with names inspired by Billie Eilish, Lana Del Rey, the Kardashian-Jenner family, and actors Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy gaining traction.

Interestingly, the ONS noted a larger pool of unique names for girls (over 35,000) compared to boys (29,560), contributing to the higher numerical dominance of top boys’ names. The data provides a fascinating snapshot of contemporary naming preferences in the UK, raising questions about cultural shifts and future trends.
